Who Are We? Human
For the BFA Graphic Design Show for my graduating class of 2025 at Utah Valley University, I decided on an immersive poster series exploring the tension between who we are and we are asked to become. Personality Traits vs. Societal Roles.
Each poster pairs a personality trait with a random role that is sometimes reshaped into. Molded, softened, or filtered to fit societal norms and expectations. The project invites viewers to reflect on their own traits or societal roles that they have embraced, how much of them they have bent, shaped, or hidden to be more “productive”, “acceptable”, or “likable”. Amidst the chaos, take a step back and remember that we are just all HUMAN in the end.
On both sides of the immersive posters, they follow a design style. Personality Identity is more expressive and organic, whereas Society roles are more structured and conforming.
The idea for the immersive side was to have the posters align just right to have the design word out “HUMAN”. To show the simple answer to the question that is asked about identity and conformity. Blending and removing all the layers (job, status, etc.) and just saying “At the core, we’re all HUMAN.”
The posters are able to function independently and speaks to the quiet compromises we make everyday: how our creativity becomes content, how our introversions become approachable. The personality traits are shown being more themselves. And the society roles side, though also being themselves, crave the other sides confidence.
But once paired, they are cohesive with one another. And aligned just right, and taking the step back. It shows that no matter what, we’re all just human in the end.
